How do you stop running late when Jobber books jobs back to back?

Jobber estimates the drive between one visit and the next, and can hold a buffer on online bookings. It does not reserve that time on your calendar. Drive time is shown as information, not created as a visit, and the drive from home or the yard to the first job is not counted.1

So the schedule can look workable and still run late. The fix is a buffer you choose yourself, and a message to the customer when you slip.

The detail below is what Jobber’s own pages say, read on 2026-10-08. Where we add a judgement, we say so.

What Jobber calculates

Drive time estimates are based on turn-by-turn routes and historical traffic between the appointment location and the place each team member is travelling from or to. Jobber adds that real traffic can differ, so the estimates may not always be accurate.125

Two limits follow from the same pages. The schedule calculates drive time only between a team member’s previous and next appointments.12 Drive time to or from home or business HQ is not included for the first or last appointment of the day.1 If your crew loads the van at 7am and the first customer is forty minutes away, the schedule does not know.

And the estimate is not a block of time. It is not created as a separate visit or task. It appears in the scheduling interface, including in the +Assign dropdown, where each team member’s drive time is shown for the slot you are looking at.1

Find a Time

Find a Time highlights open availability on the schedule and takes duration, working hours and drive time into account.2 The calendar marks suggested slots, and the assignees with the shortest drive times, in green.1 It is available on the Grow and Plus plans.12

Jobber’s pricing page, opened on 2026-10-08, shows Grow at $199 a month, or $149 a month on annual billing, and Plus at $299 or $229, each for one user.6 Both sit above Core and Connect. Whether the saving in driving covers the difference is for you to work out from your own routes.

Online booking: drive time limit and buffer

Online booking has two separate settings. A drive time limit restricts bookings to appointments within a set driving time of the other bookings that day. A fixed buffer adds a set amount of time, such as 30 minutes or an hour, between appointments.3

Both have edges. The drive time limit uses historical traffic, and it does nothing until a booking already exists that day to measure from: until then, the client sees every available slot. It also resets at midnight, local time.3 The fixed buffer applies the same gap between all appointments and ignores where the client lives.3

Our reading is that the two do different jobs. The limit keeps a day geographically tight. The buffer protects you from a job that overruns. If most of your work comes through online booking, set both. The pages we read describe both as online booking settings, and we found nothing saying they apply when you or your office book a visit by hand, so assume they do not and apply the same gaps yourself. Jobber’s online booking page also describes controls over how soon a customer can book and how much time is allotted between appointments.7

Route optimisation

Route optimisation arranges visits in an order that cuts backtracking, using actual driving distance rather than straight-line distance.4 It has conditions. Only visits without a scheduled start or end time, which Jobber calls anytime visits, can be optimised. Only admins can do it, up to seven days at a time, on Jobber.com rather than in the mobile app, and in day or week view.4

That makes it a tool for work you can sequence freely, such as a row of maintenance visits. It does not help with a plumber who has fixed 9am and 11am appointments. The help page lists Connect, Grow and Plus as the plans that include it, while the pricing page we opened describes route optimisation differently, so check what your own account shows.46

How the calendar draws a tight day

Jobber’s new schedule lays appointments out so that they overlap rather than stack, which its help page says improves legibility and information density. You can change this in personalisation settings.2 The practical point is that a crowded day can look tidy on screen. Do not read a clean-looking column as proof that the gaps are long enough.

The week view is described as a place to spot gaps or conflicts before they affect your work, and as a way to avoid overbooking.11 Treat it as a planning aid, and do the arithmetic on any day that looks full: the drive, the job, then the drive again. The pages we read do not describe an alert that fires when two visits are too close together to drive between.

What contractors do about it

Most of what follows is our judgement from how the tools are built, not a Jobber recommendation.

Put the buffer in the booking, not in your head. If a job type regularly overruns, give it a longer visit duration. A fixed buffer between appointments is blunt, but it is the only setting that protects you from the previous job.3

Count the first drive yourself. Since the schedule ignores the drive from home or the yard, start the first visit of the day later than you think necessary.1

Use an arrival window. Jobber lets you tell clients you will arrive within a window, rather than at an exact time, with options from 15 minutes to 4 hours. The window appears in client hub, booking confirmations and visit reminders.8 It is available on select plans.8 A two-hour window costs you nothing and absorbs most of a traffic delay.

Send the on-my-way text. Jobber lets you customise an on-my-way text and send it from the field.9 Send it when you leave, and send a plain line when you are going to be late. We found nothing on Jobber’s pages about a dedicated running-late message, so write that one yourself.

Find the visits that slipped. Filter the jobs list for status Late to see visits whose date has passed but which are not marked complete.2

What being late costs

We have no figure for what lateness costs a contractor and we will not invent one. The cost is plain enough without. The customer has held a morning for you, and the next customer on your list is waiting behind the first.

Jobber’s visit reminders exist so that clients are not surprised when you arrive.10 A reminder, a window and a text on the day all serve the same purpose: the customer knows what to expect, so a late arrival is a change they were told about, not a surprise.

Where we come into it

We build software that reads a Jobber account and flags what the schedule hides. One example is a day where the gaps between visits are shorter than the usual drive plus how long that job type tends to take.

You do not need us to set a buffer. If you want a list of your tightest days, we will read it once, free.
